Think Big - Dream

Hi peep!!:) in the vlog I talk about how it is ok to think big and dream sometimes. Oftentimes, people think too small and limit their potential for growth.  Having self-love land knowing your worth is critical to taking charge and pursuing your purpose. By envisioning your dreams and taking the first steps, you can empower yourself to take for first leaps. Always remember that smaller steps that you make will eventually lead to you to bigger opportunities.

Overcoming Life Storms

By:  Kimberly Swanson, M.S.-Psy, CNA

Have you ever experienced any life storms?  Well I have these last couple of weeks and it has been extremely chaotic.  My son was admitted to the hospital.    He almost died this week and I had to do CPR on him until the ambulance arrived.  With all this going on, I was having a difficult time focusing on class and dealing with a difficult professor.  My friend who I thought was my friend turned out to be the enemy.  With all of this drama, I had reevaluated which direction I want to go in my life.

The negativity occurs right when I am about to graduate from graduate school. It seems when you get closer to the finish line and about to win, an obstacles seems to get right in way.  This seems to occur right when you are about to succeed and accomplish a major goal.
The following are some of things you can do to overcome life storms:

·         Try to stay calm
·         Relieve stress
·         Reevaluate  life circumstances
·         And to remain focused

The first tip is to stay calm.  I know that it seems impossible to stay calm when your life seems to be in turmoil.  But just taking the time out to clear your head and take a break can make all of the difference in the world. When you are calm you can accomplish more things.  But when you are stressed and overwhelmed it is so easy to go off on a tangent which can make matters worse.   Remember calmness brings clarity.

Another tip is to relieve your stress.  People have different ways to relieve their stress.  For me I manage my stress through exercise and meditation.  Gardening is another activity that helps me to clear my head.  Being outdoors with nature is also therapeutic.
The next tip is to re-evaluate your life circumstances.   Sometimes you find resistance when you need to make some life adjustments.  I realized that I had to make some changes in my classes in order for things to flow.

And the last tip is to remain focused.  In order to remain focused you must look at the bigger picture. When you focus too much on the problem, you can cause yourself to feel overwhelm and want to give up.  You have to remind yourself what is at stake if your give up and what you stand to gain when you hang in there.

Going through life storms is never fun.  Believe me I am going through one right now and I am not enjoying it one bit.  But even though it seems like the storm will never come to an end.  The sunshine will eventually shine and great things will come your way.  Sometimes these storms may take your off course while other times it may lead you towards another direction that you may felt was impossible.  But overcoming life’s turbulent times it what makes you much better person and stronger.  No matter what storm you may be going through, you can overcome them; rather it means losing a love one, losing a job or your finances are not where you want them to be you can move forward and can still prevail.

Don't Settle for Less

Why do people settle for less when they desire so much more?  You have to pray and meditate over your situation.  Having faith and believing in yourself is the key to not settling.  When you lack confidence it can cause you to not reach your fullest potential.  So think big and trust your intuition and know that you are worth more.

Stay Driven

Once you know your purpose and are following your path towards your dreams, it is important to stay focused and to stay driven.  There may be some times in life where obstacles and storms may come your way. That is the time when you have to stay prayed up and to receive your extra daily dose of God’s healing words of prayer.

It is also important to remember to clear your chakras, the energy points within your body.  Through meditation and prayer you can drastically improve your vitality.

Staying driven is a continuous process of staying focused and replenishing the much needed energy to complete each goal or task.  Believe in yourself and don’t give up.  You are driven to be a true success.

Staying Healthy

By:  Kimberly Swanson, M.S.-Psy, CNA

As I get older, I am beginning to see the importance of staying healthy.  Some things have occurred in my life that made me realize that I need to be more proactive with my health.  I can no longer just sit around and stay dormant .  I have to get up and take action.  Beside how can you reach your educational goals if you  are sick?  The following are some of the things I am doing to get back in shape:

         -Taking charge of my health
         -Annual doctor’s visit
         -Exercise regiment
                   -Eating healthy
               -Managing stress

The first tip is having a medical checkup.  I am a full time student and a single mom on a fixed income so I had to see what kind of health resources that are available to me.  It can be pretty tough going to the doctor if you are boot strap with your finances.  So I had to start thinking outside of the box.  I started researching  and talking to people and that was when I stumbled cross a local nonprofit wellness center for women that was affordable for me.  Sometimes students can find community centers or local health departments to get services.  Often times these services are based on your income on a sliding scale.

Another tip is to have an exercise regimen.  I started my exercise regimen by joining to a local health and wellness program.  I have a wellness coach who is working with me to set goals on improving my health.  Going to the gyms can be very expensive for some college students on a budget.   But there are some places such as the YMCA that is based on you income and can be affordable through financial assistance program.

The next tip is eating healthy.  I started to thinking about  a diet plan for both myself and my family.  I now try to prepare more home meals for my family.  Whenever I do go out  to eat I now research to see the calories and amount of sodium and fat that are served one the menu. When I more aware of what I am eating,  I tend to make healthier decision when selecting items from fast food restaurants.  My daughter I  volunteer at the community garden and that is how we get some of our fresh fruits and vegetables.

The last tip is to manage your stress in life.   In order to stay healthy and stay focused on school, you should try to reduce stress.  By being organized, and looking for ways to make your life more simple.  This is what I am looking at right now.  How to come up with  simpler ways to care for my family, manage school, and career.

Staying healthy is a never ending process.  You have to take action and work on your health before it is too late.  My father always told me that “Your health is your first wealth.”  I did not know what he meant by that statement experienced it myself.  So take good care of yourself, stay  healthy, and learn to love yourself.  Being healthy is crucial for longevity.

When Changes Occur In Your Life

By:  Kimberly Swanson, MS –Psy, CNA

During a person’s entire life time, they can go through countless changes.  Sometimes these transitions are good while other times they are not.  How you cope and adjust to these changes can make a difference as to how well you bounce back.

I been through several changes in my life some are good while other are not.  The good changes are completing my master’s degree in psychology.  For my internship I am working at a local counseling center where I am getting some valuable experience in working in both counseling and in medical billing and coding.  I am learning different techniques when it comes to both individual and group counseling.  I am having the opportunity to teach classes on both anger management and stress.

With my internship I am also learning how to do medical billing and coding and how to process in processing payments through Medicaid.  I am learning a wealth of information.  Every time I go to the counseling center, I practically learn something new.  I am also in the process of pursing my Licensed Associate Professional Counseling (LAPC).

The negative thing that occurred in my life was losing my father; it hit my family and I pretty hard.  He will be greatly missed.  Having these new great beginnings taking place in my life and then having to cope with   death and losing a loved one can be very hard and difficult.  The following are some of things I have done in order to adjust to these changes:
  • Remain positive
  • Remain clear
  • Keep an eye on the bigger picture
  • Remember your purpose

The first tip is to remain positive.  When you stay positive more positive things tend to come your way.  Negativity can create blockages and make you become more stressed while transitioning.  For example, a change could be that you have lost your job but if you become negative and give up, your will never reach your fullest potential.  But if you remain positive and keep on believing that there is more good things coming your way your will, eventually you will get back on track with your life.

Another tip is to remain clear.  It is important to have clarity and know which route is the best path for you to follow.  Change can sometimes make you go on a tangent when you don’t have clarity.  You may start on frivolous activities that can pull you away from your purpose.

Even when things are not going your way, you should keep an eye on the bigger picture.  When my father died this past week, it felt like my world was turned upside down.  We had a really close relationship and he is going to be missed.  I took another term off from school.  But I know that I have to go back stronger than ever when I start back into my PhD program.  Because I have made a promise to my dad that I will continue my education and pursue my dream of becoming doctor.

Looking at the bigger picture of your predicament helps you to remember your purpose. It allows you to take your life changes in stride rather it’s good or bad.  It enables you to live your life with true meaning, a destiny, and yes a purpose.

Peace & Love

Things tend to flow a lot easier when you are filled with peace and love.   When you are filled with hate and anger, it can tear down you mind, body and spirit.  Don’t let negative people and situations steal your joy and tear down your spirit.  Allow love and peace to flow and radiate within you. Peace and love can be yours; now is the time to take action.  The universe is waiting for you to make the first move. -

Love Yourself

Sometimes we focus so much on others that we lose sight of ourselves.  There may be some individuals that don't see the worth of who they are.  You have to learn to love self first.  Without self-love it is hard to give and to receive love in return. So know your self worth, know that you are love and deserve to be loved in return.

How I Juggle School With Being a Single Mom

As, a single parent, it comes with many trials and tribulations.  I am a single mom with three children. I have two boys and one girl.  And as a student and going down this road can be a difficult journey.  But with will power and perseverance, you can make your dreams come true.  I am currently pursuing my PhD in psychology.  Here are some things I do to try to make my life a lot simpler and they are:

·         Manage your time
·         Delegate your responsibilities
·         Avoid negative people/situations
·         Take some time out  for self

The first tip is to manage your time.  I feel that in order to be an effective student with added responsibilities that you must be a good manager of your time.  Often times it can be so easy to get off course and to go into a tangent.  I find that managing my time more wisely helps to avoid getting off task.  When I first start my day, I try to write a do list on my calendar of things I have to do.   It is also a good idea to write a schedule and start a daily routine for self.

Another tip is to delegate your responsibilities.  Being the sole provider can come at a price and that is having everyone depending on you for support.  But the question is where your support?  This is when you have to learn how to manage your household to the point where is ran efficiently.  For instance, I may assign some of the house chores for some for my older children, such as washing dishes and folding cloths, so I can have some time to work on my studies.

The third tip is to avoid negative people.  Negative people are anyone who creates nothing but drama and hardship into your life.   It is hard enough having to raise children alone but having extra burdens such an abusive partner, freeloaders, and leeches on your back can bring you down.  Negative people can be friend, partners, and even other family members.   If these negative individuals are not supportive of you, then you may need to see if they are worth being a part of your inner circle.  That is why it is important to surround yourself around positive people.

Next is to take time out for self.  When was the last time you just took a mental break or did some self-pampering? You can pamper yourself with simple things like taking a long warm bubble bath or getting your hair and nails done.  Every now and then it is good to just take some time out to clear your mind especially when you are feeling a lot of stress.  Sometimes I go and meditate to clear my head for a few minutes and this alone makes a world of difference.

These are some of the things that I do to help stay focused and motivated.  Being a single parent and going to college is not easy but it is not impossible.  Envisioning my bright future is what inspires me to keep on pursuing my dreams.  Just like I am doing it, so can you.

Believe In Yourself

Life can throw many storms and obstacles which can make you feel frustrated and not believe in self.  Believing in self is important because it is what pulls you through the hard times.

Reaching goals and certain milestones is a wonderful feeling but trying to get there is another ballgame.  One of the key elements to success it is to believe in self.  This means to believe in your dreams and your purpose.  Besides if you don’t believe in yourself who else will?

Take Time for Self-Care

By:  Kimberly Swanson "Purpoz", MS - Psy, CNA
It is important to take care of yourself.  Often times some people are so consumed with with the physical and caring for others that they often times forget about themselves.  This is so true with parents, care givers, and so many others who have the 24 hour job of caring for others.

Self-care allows you to relax and to release all of the negative energy that accumulates throughout the day.  It allows you to release and to rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit.

Don’t Give Up!

By:  Kimberly Swanson PsyM, LAPC, CNA

Have you ever had a period in your life where it seems like things are just not falling into place?  Or you may feel that nothing is connecting or going smoothly.  Well, that’s how I have been feeling lately.

I did not get my article published in the science journal because I missed the deadline for submitting final edits.  I was very disappointed and felt discouraged about not having everything in done time. The professor and editor thought I had to a great concept and that I should continue to revise it with their feedback and re-submit it again for next year’s publication.   So I am going to try again next year.

What do you do when you are feeling frustrated and want to give up?  These are some of the things I do to stay focused and motivated:
  • ·         Analyze your situation
  • ·         Stay positive
  • ·         Remember your purpose

I find that sometimes when things are not going right, I need to sit down and analyze my situation.  Sometimes things don’t connect as it should because something is missing or perhaps you are not going in the wrong direction.  While analyzing my situation,  I began to notice some things about myself.  Some things were not connecting for me because I needed to make some major changes in my life, such as letting go of past mistakes.  I had to learn from them and learn how to move forward.

Another area that was lacking in my life, was my health.  I was constantly looking out for others and making sure everyone was ok.  But I failed to make sure that I was ok.  I am realizing now that I can’t handle family, school, and work if I am sick.  I know now that I have to take better care of myself in order to accomplish more things.

No matter how bad your situation may be, you must stay positive.  I am seeing this now.  I try to stay positive even during the worst of times.  Being negative can be extremely draining.   Instead of having negative thoughts, replace them with good ones such as, “I am going to meet my goals with school today.”  Or “I am going to find that job that I have been looking for.  Positive thinking encourages you to keep on trying and not give up.

Another tip is to remember your purpose.  Sometimes I have to sit back and remind myself why I am pursuing my goals?  I  think about what a major difference my life would be for both my family and when I finish school and complete my education.  I see getting my education as a way of improving my life circumstance.  It is a stepping stone towards fulfilling my life purpose.  Envisioning and believing in myself is what inspires me to do better.

These are my tips for not giving up.  You must continue to believe in yourself and keep going.    No one is perfect,  but you can see each mistake as a learning experience towards greatness.
